An old Android phone as a camera: what Lumixi does

Lumixi is a baby monitor first. But its Camera films any room: check that the dog is asleep, glance at the living room from the garden or the office. Here is what it does, and above all what it does not do.

Uses that fit

01

A pet home alone

See live whether the dog is asleep or the cat knocked something over, and get an alert when it barks or moves.

02

A room while you are elsewhere

The living room from the garden, the house from the office: the Monitor receives the video on Wi-Fi or 4G/5G.

03

An older child taking a nap

The same Camera as for a baby: sound, picture, alerts and a night light turned on from your phone.

What the Camera does

Live view: video and sound on your Monitor phone, on Wi-Fi at home or 4G/5G outside. Both phones need internet.

Alerts: sound and motion, each with its own sensitivity. If the Camera loses its connection, the Monitor is told: quietly after 30 seconds, with a sound after 90 seconds.

Several cameras: a Monitor can link several and watches one of them at a time. Night mode keeps a picture in dim light, without infrared vision.

What it does not do

No recording. Video and sound are stored nowhere: you cannot replay what happened while you were away. For video surveillance with history, pick a security app that records, such as Alfred, or a security camera.

Lumixi has no siren and no person detection either, and does not replace an alarm. It runs on Android only.

Filming at home, with respect for others

Film only your own home. So as not to light up the room, the Camera’s screen turns black after one minute, but the phone keeps filming: tell anyone present, a guest, a babysitter or a cleaner. The law restricts filming people, especially someone who works in your home. Lumixi is not meant to film anyone without their knowledge.

Setup

Set up the camera in three steps

  1. 1

    Plug in the old phone

Long monitoring drains the battery: keep the Camera on mains power, on a steady stand, on Wi-Fi.

  2. 2

    Add the camera

On your phone, choose “Monitor”, then “Camera” on the old phone. Tap “Add a camera” on the Monitor and scan the code shown.

  3. 3

    Tune the alerts

In “Camera settings”, adapt the sound and motion sensitivity to the room. A pet that moves a lot needs a less sensitive motion setting.

What it costs

The Camera phone is free. The Monitor phone uses Lumixi Premium: a 7-day trial for eligible new subscribers, then €1.99 a month in Belgium and France, US$1.89 in the United States and £1.69 in the United Kingdom; Google Play shows the local price elsewhere. No ads.

Frequently asked questions

Can I watch my dog or cat with Lumixi?

Yes. The Camera films any room and the Monitor receives the live video, with sound and motion alerts. Lower the motion sensitivity if the pet moves a lot, otherwise the alerts pile up.

Does Lumixi record video?

No. Video and sound are stored nowhere: Lumixi shows the live view and sends alerts, but keeps no footage to watch later.

Can I watch the camera from work?

Yes, if both phones have internet: the Camera on Wi-Fi at home, the Monitor on Wi-Fi or 4G/5G elsewhere. Video uses mobile data.

Does Lumixi replace an alarm?

No. Lumixi has no siren, no person detection and no recording, and it is not an alarm system. To protect a home, pick a dedicated security solution.
